Context And Mission
The design of modern combustion systems needs to address challenges in aspects related to global efficiency, reduction of pollutant emissions, major flexibility of operation and reduction of thermo-acoustic instabilities. The use of numerical simulations as a tool for design is growing in the last decade as more computing power is becoming available. Access to cutting-edge supercomputers opens new frontiers in combustion simulation and encourages a revision of models and methodologies to harness upcoming Exascale machines’ full potential. This is one of the main objectives of the Center of Excellence in Combustion (CoEC) – the European H2020 project gathering major players in HPC and Combustion Simulation. The proposed research project is focused on the development of high-fidelity numerical simulations of spray flames with Adaptive Mesh Refinement for gas turbine applications. It includes the study and characterization of atmospheric and high-pressure spray flames using DNS and LES approaches using tabulated and non-tabulated combustion models.
The research team that the applicant will be involved is the Propulsion Technologies Group at CASE Department of BSC. The team is a multidisciplinary group with researchers from all disciplines and with strong background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The team is involved in many EU and industrial projects related to this topic, where the successful activities and the publications on highly ranked scientific journals give the proved expertise.
The main duties include the development of advanced droplet heating and evaporation models, efficient algorithms for the coupling of liquid particles with gas phase dynamics and error estimators for dynamic mesh adaptation.
The candidate should hold a PhD Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautics or Mechanical Engineering with background in turbulence and combustion.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
General knowledge on fluid mechanics, LES, numerical methods, combustion chemistry are expected.
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Computational skills and parallel programming for HPC are not necessary, but will be considered an asset.
Ability to work independently and make decisions
Fluency in English is essential, Spanish is welcome.
The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department

Duration: Temporary – 3 years renewable
